The Hayward Day Labor Center is a community within our community, comprised of hard-working men and women dedicated every day to finding work to support their families.
To address mental and physical health issues like depression, loneliness, diabetes, and obesity, the Hayward Day Labor Center developed our Los Lobos Soccer Program. The program currently has two (2) Coordinadores (worker leaders) that help run the program. The number of teams has expanded to eighteen (18) and includes over three-hundred and fifty (350) workers and their families. We hold nine (9) games each weekend and the Capitanes of each team along with the Coordinadores meet regularly to make decisions about all aspects of the league. The tournament lasts about six (6) months, including play-off games between the best eight (8) teams.
Because of the number of teams, we work closely with the local parks department and high schools for use of the soccer fields. In exchange for the use of the fields, we donate money towards the high school sports program and clean the school campuses and parks regularly. This venue gives us access to a majority of workers and their families when we want to pass out information about a health issue, for example. We are in need of additional equipment and paint (for the lines on the field) because the program has been so successful.
If you would like more information about this program or would like to make a donation to support this program, please contact us at 510-782-WORK (9675) or email us at workers@daylaborcenter.org.
